About Me

I don’t remember a time when photography wasn’t part of my life.

I grew up in Southern California, where my dad was a photographer for a major city newspaper. He worked there for 35 years, and in our family, every event—big or small—was captured on something called… film. (you may have heard of it.)

Dad is gone now, and I don’t use film (much), but his influence remains deeply rooted in me. While I didn’t pursue photography as a primary profession, it has always played a central role in my life. I was on the photography staff in high school, minored in visual arts/photography in college, and spent many weekends as a teenager acting as my dad’s second shooter at NFL and MLB games. Today, I have boxes upon boxes of photos of my own family—enough to keep me scanning for years. And I’ve inherited my dad’s cameras, negatives, and decades of award-winning photojournalism work.

One of the best pieces of advice he gave me was:

“Try to be the best photographer you can. But if you can’t be the best, get your camera where others don’t—or won’t—or can’t.”

That wisdom is at the heart of Selective Pixels. While I always aim for technical and artistic excellence, I’m especially drawn to photographic challenges that go beyond simply pointing a camera at a pretty scene. Whether it’s using a telescope to collect dozens of hours of data from a distant galaxy, freezing the split-second interaction of liquids with high-speed lighting, or piloting a drone into places only aerial craft can reach—I’m passionate about capturing images that are beautiful, rare, and thought-provoking, and bringing them to light. (Yes, pun intended.)

I hope my work invites you to see the world differently—from galaxies light-years away to the briefest moment of motion.

Please take a look through my galleries to see if any of the images would fit into your world.

Oh, and my name is Bob Redding. Thanks for dropping by!
